Couch To 5k – Week 9

I made it! I managed to complete the final week of the Couch To 5k plan and as such have ran for 30 minutes non-stop three times this week which is roughly 5km! I never thought that I would be able to get to this point on Day 1 of the plan and I was overcome with a great sense of achievement after completing the first run of the week.

Now that I’ve finished the plan, I think it would be beneficial to summarise my thoughts regarding the Couch To 5k as it might help those looking to start it in 2018.

Firstly, the plan is a great way to get started with running.
Other than physical education at school and playing football when I was younger, I’ve never been an active person. Granted I recently started cycling but, as mentioned before, they are two different sports and utilise different muscles. I could easily cycle for a couple hours but struggled running for 3 minutes! The plan provided me with clear progression from clueless novice to a beginner runner.

Secondly, it’s great to run with others.
I completed the whole plan with my parents, both of whom are much more active runners than I am, and I feel I would have struggled with motivation without them. Having someone to run with gives you someone to encourage you to keep going when you feel like quitting and just makes the whole process generally better.

Thirdly, the feeling of achievement is immense.
If, like me, you’ve never been much into sports and don’t consider yourself to be an overly fit person, completing the plan provides a great sense of achievement. It literally puts a smile on your face knowing that you’ve managed to do something you didn’t think you could do and it’s clear why running is used to help manage/combat anxiety and depression.

Finally, it’s good for your health.
The benefits of an active lifestyle are obvious and running provides a cheap and accessible way to reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. You can run pretty much anywhere and all you need is a pair of shoes. So put your shoes on, step out the front door and start running!

Thank you to everyone who has followed my journey and offered support along the way and good luck to anyone looking at starting the plan in 2018. Have a great new year!
